Katelyn Oyen, Vermillion High School student, discusses her passion project - the Empower Hygiene Project. The project makes packages of essential hygiene products for people in and around Vermillion who are in need. Each packet contains a travel-sized bottle of shampoo/conditioner and body wash. There is also a comb, toothbrush and toothpaste. People in poverty have to "make impossible decisions....do I pay the rent or do I buy food or do I buy soap?" A lack of hygiene products in the home impacts an individual's health in many ways. So far they have created 800 kits, 700 of which have been distributed at the Vermillion Food Pantry/Feeding Vermillion.
